What can you really say about Emerald other than the eponymous, totalitarian city-state you may remember at the end of the yellow brick road? You may not know much else so join us for our second birthstone blog on Emeralds.
Emerald is the birthstone for the month of May and carries a deep, rich green color of Spring and is absolutely dripping with rebirth energy. One of the traditional gemstones for the astrological sign Cancer, Emeralds are considered a stone of love. One of the rarest gemstones, a well-cut emerald will consistently be priced higher per carat than diamonds. Until very recently only emeralds, rubies, and sapphires were considered precious gems, everything else was considered semi-precious.

Emeralds have been mined as early as 300 BC in Egypt, with Cleopatra being a trendsetter with emerald jewelry. Emerald engagement rings have adorned the prominent ring fingers of Jackie Kennedy and was at the center of the scandal of 1936 King Edward VIII’s abdication when he proposed to his American lover.
The deeper and more vivid the green, the more valuable an emerald is. Emeralds have the rare distinction of inclusions (imperfections) not detracting from their value due to their scarcity.
Emerald is a great stone for increasing passion, for an interest, someone, or a career. For romantic love, wear or carry an Emerald out of sight close to the heart. Emerald has an excellent calming effect. Join us next month for a double feature birthstone blog, June babies are so lucky they get to choose between Pearl and Moonstone!
