Fiery Fermentation Shot

Today I wanted to share a recipe I’ve concocted to benefit my gut health. I feel like every other new health article I come across has something to say about healing or taking care of your gut and all the good bacteria that lives in it, but to be honest I feel like I’ve been way ahead of the curve on this for a couple of years now!

I used to constantly buy kombucha- not only for its health benefits, but also because I loved the taste and the delightful bubbly-ness of the drink. Eventually, I realized that it’s kinda expensive to buy bottles upon bottles of kombucha and was determined to start making my own. Thankfully, I was able to find someone that was willing to share their SCOBY (the Symbiotic Colony Of Bacteria and Yeast that ferments sweetened tea into kombucha), and three years later, I am still making new batches on a regular basis from the decedents of the original SCOBY I was gifted.

However, my fascination with gut-beneficial products did not end with kombucha. I have experimented with drinking a straight shot of undiluted Apple Cider Vinegar every morning, but became worried that all the extra acid was not good for my teeth. I have also tried numerous other store bought “Gut Shots” and have enjoyed many of them, but they are not exactly the most cost-effective.

To bypass the cost of the expensive products I have found in stores, I decided to create my own Fermentation Shot recipe! It is by no means “tasty”, and some would say that it is downright “unpleasant” to drink, but sometimes you have to suck it up for the sake of your health. I recommend having a glass of water on hand to act as a chaser for this fiery little guy.


To make 16 ounces of the Fiery Fermentation Shot you will need:
  • 1 cup Kombucha (I use my homemade batches- usually a ginger flavor)
  • 1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar (preferably organic and unfilitered so the
  • mother is still in the bottle)
  • 1 inch piece of fresh ginger
  • 1 medium fresh turmeric root
Place all ingredients in a blender (you can leave the ginger and turmeric unpeeled- but scrub them well first!) and blend for 1 full minute. You can then pour the mixture directly into a glass bottle and store it in the refrigerator, or strain the solids out before bottling. Drink one ounce in the mornings daily for a boost of benefits for your gut!

Optional: mix a pinch of black pepper into your shot before drinking-
it aids in the body’s absorption of the beneficial compounds found in turmeric.


Kombucha has shown to improve digestion and prevent harmful yeast overgrowth in the body, and can also improve mental clarity. Studies have shown that Apple Cider Vinegar’s acetic acid has helped to lower
blood sugar and can potentially help fight cancer as well. Ginger functions as a potent digestive aid, and the curcuminoids in Turmeric are highly anti-inflamitory. Together these ingredients function as a nourishing, albeit very, very potent way to start your morning.
