January’s birthstone is the lovely, deep-red Garnet. It’s name is derived from the old-english word gernet which means ‘dark red’ which comes from the Latin granatus‘ grain, seed’ probably in reference to the pomegranate seed.

Garnet comes in many different colors, with red being the most common. Garnet is actually a term for an entire group of silicate minerals. Garnet has long been used as a talisman for protection, and are often employed to cope with bad dreams, or depressed states of mind.
