The Chakra Series: Sacral Chakra 101

Sacral Chakra 101 Drishti

What is the Sacral Chakra?

The Sacral Chakra, or Svadhistana (from the Sanskrit words swa meaning “self”, and adhishthana meaning “established”) is located in the lower belly. It is associated with the sex organs and the kidneys and glows the color orange.

The Sacral Chakra is our center of creativity, sexuality, sensuality, and our ability to connect to our own emotions as well as find empathy for others. If our Sacral Chakra is balanced, we can trust that our relationship with ourselves and with the world to be pleasureful, nurturing and supportive. Connected to the element of water, Svadhistana is all about the F word(s)- fun, flow, freedom, and fluidity.

Imbalances in this chakra are expressed through a difficulty showing one’s emotions, needs, or creativity. One might feel closed off emotionally from others. Or have a fear of adventure and spontaneity. Additionally, a lack of sexual expression, or an overindulgence, are connected to an imbalance here. Discomfort in ones body is often connected to a locked Sacral chakra.

When balanced, one learns of their boundless creative power. One can find flow as they develop a healthy relationship to pleasure. Relationships deepen as one’s emotions are fully addressed and understood as needs and boundaries are skillfully expressed.

Connect and Balance your Sacral Chakra

BREATHE

Takes some time for stillness and getting in touch with your senses. Actively utilizing the senses if a great way to tap into the present moment and the feeling body. The Sacral Chakra is the center of emotions and intimacy, so taking to time to tune into physical sensation and your own mind is a great entry point.

Find a comfortable seat. Try to place yourself in a quiet spot.

Close the eyes and become aware of any sounds you can hear. Become aware of any smells.  Hone in on any tastes on the tongue. Notice the colors floating behind your closed eyes. Take a moment to feel any sensations on your bare skin, like a breeze, a fan, is the air around you warm or cool?

Maybe notice the waistband of your pants. Feel where your body connects to the floor. Notice the coolness of the inhale in the nostrils. Notice the warmth of the exhale.

Take your time. Or maybe start with a minute or two of this awareness each day, then start to add time on as you feel more comfortable.
